  Introduction

I needed a fake fiancee to play a part.

She was looking desperately for a fresh start.

Neither of us got what we were looking for.

In fact we got way more than we bargained for.

Billionaire Chance Parker has worked hard for every single dollar he’s got, and he’s not about to lose his fortune to anyone without a fight. But he needs reinforcements. Political ones. And they want to see a married man with a squeaky clean image before they help.

The solution? To hire the drop dead, sexy, woman he met in the red dress as his fake fiancee. The one he can’t stop thinking about every night. That shouldn’t be complicated, right?

Pretending For Mr. Parker is a steamy standalone, fake fiancee romance, with no cheating and a HEA. Be advised that it may be a little too sexy for readers under 18.

  Note From Author

Sometimes one of my characters likes to do all of the talking. So this novel features a fake fiancee romance told from the male point of view only!

  Enjoy,

  Chapter One

I am sitting in my office, top floor of a skyscraper overlooking the city, and going over paperwork when Bennett enters through the door.

“Hey, did you call me?” he asks.

“Yes, are we all set for the charity gala this evening?”

I stand from my desk and peer out the window. All I can see below are tiny people scurrying through the streets. I feel so powerful way up here, overlooking the city, and so I smile to myself. I’ve come a long way, and the power of the climb up to my level feels intoxicating.

“Yes, we’re all set. It’s the senator’s charity gala. He’s expecting us.”

“Fine, I’ll meet you there.” I sit back down behind my desk. “I just have a few more things to catch up on.”

After working a few more hours, I walk out of the building to find Spencer waiting for me. He runs my security detail and doubles as my driver, which makes him privy to my private affairs. With a background in the armed forces, I trust him with my life.

I hop in the car as the sun sets, it creates the perfect backdrop to this glorious city, then he whisks me home to my penthouse suite. As I dress for tonight’s event, I play with the bowtie around my neck, then look into the mirror, and run a hand through my blonde hair.

My company, Parker Enterprises Inc., makes a generous donation each year to Senator Denkirk’s foundation. Due to the nature of my business, government politicians are better kept in my pocket than not; I always make sure the appropriate people stay in office. It’s to my benefit.

Senator Denkirk and I have grown close over the years, and he’s “helped me out” with acquiring government contracts to say the least. He always makes sure that things work in my favor, so I have no problem throwing money at him to ensure my success.

  It’s the perfect relationship.

  Chapter Two

Flashing lights ignite the night sky, laughter fills the streets, and everyone is dressed to the hilt. Limousines line the entryway to the museum venue, and a red carpet stretches out to the curb. I can feel finesse and panache hanging in the air the closer I get to the entrance. There’s definitely a strong buzz of excitement. I hand my ticket over to the door attendant and wait as he studies it.

“Right this way, sir,” he says, waving his hand and ushering me and Bennett inside.

I step up the stairs that lead to the giant ballroom and hold my head high. Easy classical music plays from a band off in the corner of the room, purple banners with pictures of Senator Denkirk’s face hang from the balconies, and there are people clustered in groups all over the ballroom chatting.

Everyone’s head turns as I pass by each group, and I make sure to smile to them. I want to be seen. It’s important that everyone in this room makes the connection between me and the senator. He stands in the center of a small crowd and waves his hand to me as I walk by.

“Chance, over here.” He speaks with clarity and authority and everyone notices. Bennett and I make our way over to him. He offers me a solid handshake and then smiles at Bennett.

“Hello, sir,” Bennett says, shaking hands with the senator.

“Bennett, my good man, how are you?” He chuckles as he turns his attention back to me. His broad grin stretches wide like the Grand Canyon, and his stark white hair hangs in unruly waves over his brow.

“Hello, Senator. Great party.” I nod and wave my hand around the room.

“Thank you. Has everyone here met Chance Parker and his right hand, Bennett?”

He introduces us to his group of friends, and we stay a while, mingling with them. Everyone seems to listen intently as I speak about politics and my company until I notice that their eyes are glazing over.

“Chance makes weapons,” the senator explains simply as he laughs to the smiling crowd.

“Well, I create the technology for the weapons as well as the designs,” I clarify.

I didn’t want to go into full detail as to what we do on a day-to-day basis, since it’s obvious they wouldn’t understand anyway, so I smile and do my best to make small talk with the senator’s friends.

Bennett and I eventually part from the group after a nice amount of time and seek out the bar. The senator follows and the bartender patiently grins at all three of us as he waits for our order.
r />   “A gin and tonic,” Bennett says and then looks to me.

  “The same,” I say.

The senator motions to me to talk privately with him.

“Remember what I said last week, Chance?”

“You mean about me finding a wife?” I cringe internally.

“Yes, there are certain members of Capitol Hill who actually don’t trust a man who isn’t married. So if I’m going to go to bat for you, especially up against Fox and his supporters, then I’m going to need you to polish your image a little.”

“They don’t trust me? I’ve built a billion dollar company single handedly. I don’t outsource overseas. I’m a great American success story. What’s not to trust?”

“Some politicians only trust folks who have some skin in the game. Something to lose. Family is a man’s greatest vulnerability, and you don’t have one.”

  “Fine, I’ll think about it.”

I hated that Denkirk was bringing up this marriage business at a time like this. I just wanted to relax, have a little fun and be seen– not talk shop. I’m not even remotely close to marrying someone. Hell, I’m barely seeing anyone. I work. I don’t have time for anything else.

The bartender makes our drinks in record time and hands them to us. As we take a seat, Bennett surveys the ballroom. “Plenty of pretty women here this evening.”

“Yeah, I guess,” I say as I glance around. Beautiful albeit boring women of high society huddle in groups wearing their pearls and heels and extravagant gowns. Bennett seems to be foaming at the mouth as he takes in each woman one at a time.

“I have made all the necessary arrangements for the donation, so you can relax and have fun, Chance. Whatever Denkirk just said to you will be satisfied once he sees the size of your monetary donation.”

Schmoozing politicians and high-class citizens was something I have always excelled at, but sometimes I find them very tedious. I have kissed enough ass in my life that I feel it is time to finally relax and be myself.

I have worked my ass off, starting my company from scratch, and now that my success is evident, I’d like to live my life as I please. Why the fuck do I have to get married to prove some sort of point to these tightly wound DC crooks?

Bennett places down his drink and lets out a low whistle. “Wow, would you get a load of that?” He blatantly points his finger in the direction of where his eyes are staring.

I swivel in my seat to get a better view and am awestruck by the beauty of the woman he’s referring to. She’s tall and sleek and has curves in all the right places that God intended.

I watch as her silhouette moves from behind the curtain, and then I try to catch my breath. Time for me has just stood still. My heartbeat accelerates and small beads of sweat break out across my forehead.

“Are you all right? You act like you’ve just seen a ghost.” Bennett waves his hand in front of my face, and I close my eyes.

I shake my head as I try to speak. “I… I…”

I haven’t even seen her face yet, but her body is tantalizing. Her tiny red dress skims her body and showcases her amazing legs. Her hair is silken brown, hanging past her shoulders and bouncing as she moves. Her skin is the color of bourbon on a soft summer night. She walks as if she owns the room, her head held high, her dark eyes shining in the light. In a room full of boring pearls, she shines bright like a diamond.

The beautiful woman smiles at a few people and then makes her way over to them. A waiter offers her a tray of champagne, and she lifts a glass to her lips. My eyes bulge as she sips the golden fizz and laughs joyously at something that someone has just said to her.

The echo of her laughter travels to my ears and sends chills up my spine. My dick seems to jump when her head snaps back as the laughter moves through her body. And then, as if some gravitational pull has brought her deep set eyes to meet mine, I stare and smile warmly at her. I tip my drink toward her and then place it back down on the bar.

The moment she smiles back, I feel the planets align as a jolt through my system makes my heart skip a billion beats all in one second.

“Helloooo, Chance,” Bennett says, laughing and trying to get my attention.

I shake my head and turn to him.

“I have to meet her,” I say as I stand.

Bennett doesn’t say a word and even if he did, I didn’t hear him—because I am so far gone in this moment.

The woman glides across the floor toward me as I walk toward her in a trance. My eyes are transfixed on hers; the beating of my heart in my ears grows louder.

A jaw-dropping smile brakes across her face, and the room ceases to exist. She is only a few feet from me yet seems so far away. I need to be closer. I move forward and reach my hand toward hers, grabbing her small hand in mine, then placing a kiss to her palm.

The air is sucked from the room and an all-encompassing black hole has taken its place. Void of all thought and reason, I squeeze her hand tighter. We stand together, lost in time, until finally some blood reaches my brain and it begins to function.

  “Hello,” I breathe heavily.

“Hello.” Her soft voice comforts me in a way I’d never felt before.

  “Would you like to dance?”

“Sure.” A warm grin spreads across her face.

Never letting go of her hand, I move her onto the dance floor then place my arm around her waist as we move to the music.

I don’t dare break the cosmic spell she has over me; speaking would ruin everything– so we dance in silence. We sway for hours or minutes… I’m not sure.

Gripped tightly together, she leans back, and I stare into her honeyed eyes. She is drop dead fucking gorgeous, and I am the luckiest man in the room right now.

“What’s your name?” She has an eloquent way of speaking that only enhances her raw beauty.

“Chance, and yours?” I ask with boundless confidence.

“Erika.” The timber of her voice, combined with the sound of her name, rings in my ears and makes me see stars.

“Erika.” The name flows from my lips as I repeat it over and over in my head. “Would you like a drink?” I ask. Her dazzling eyes meet mine as she stops dancing.

“Yes, I would like that.” She sweeps her coffee-colored hair across her shoulders as she makes her way to the bar.

A huge spread of food had been laid out for the gala with chafing dishes full of tasty delights. We make our way to the buffet; our eyes grew wide at all of the offerings as we grab another glass of champagne along the way.

Erika selects a piece of chocolate cake and brings it to her nose, sniffing deeply as she closes her eyes. She looks positively pornographic as her lashes flutter along her skin.

“That cake looks delicious,” I say when actually she’s the one who looks delicious. I could definitely eat her for dessert.

Her eyes pop open and she looks straight in my eyes. “I’m sorry, what did you say?”

I laugh as her cheeks flush from what I think is embarrassment.

“Never mind,” I say. “Enjoy the cake.”

“I apologize. I smell chocolate and the whole world fades away.”

She grabs a fork as we make our way to a table. As I watch her take bite after bite of the decadent cake, my body heats with desire. She mesmerizes me, and all she is doing is eating a piece of damn cake.

“What do you do for work?” I ask when she places her fork down.

Her face twists and she wiggles in her seat. “I’m actually in between jobs at the moment.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. What did you do for work?”

“I used to run a marketing department for a start-up, but the company went under about eight months ago, so we were all let go.”

I lean in closer to her. “Hopefully it wasn’t because of your marketing.” I smile with a flirtatious grin.

She giggles and says, “No, it was for the obvious reasons. They were young and ambitious and ran out of money.”

  I nod in understanding.

If you’re looking for work, I may know of a great position for you.”

  “Really? That would be great.”

“I’m actually in need of a marketing director for my company, Parker Enterprises Inc. Ever heard of it?”

“Of course I’ve heard of it. Wait, do you manage the marketing division of Parker Enterprises?”

“No, I’m actually the owner,” I admit.

“Of the entire company?” she asks incredulously.

“Yep,” I grin proudly. “The whole damn thing.”

“Oh boy, I feel embarrassed I didn’t recognize you. They did a whole spread on you in Forbes.”

“No, please don’t be embarrassed, but if you’re interested, bring your résumé on Monday and you can interview for the position.”

I smile at her to reassure her that no apology was necessary. Hey, I’m surprised she heard of my company at all. Even though most of the suits in here know who I am, doesn’t mean that she should.

“That would be amazing. Thank you.”

A waiter offers us some more champagne, and she takes a fresh glass and raises it to her lips. Her amazing ruby red lips. I can’t keep my eyes off of them.

“What brings you here this evening?” I ask as I take a sip. “Do you have some sort of affiliation with the senator’s charity or perhaps his campaign?”
